Painters in Inner City Sydney

Heritage terrace, interior and exterior painting throughout Surry Hills, Paddington, Darlinghurst, Redfern, Glebe, Pyrmont and Ultimo. Patient preparation, respect for period detail and clear fixed pricing.

Inner City Sydney is the most demanding part of the city to paint well, and it is also the most rewarding. These are the oldest continuously occupied residential streets in the country, dense with Victorian and Federation terraces, converted warehouses, workers' cottages and newer apartments squeezed between them. Maestro Painting has been working across these suburbs for more than 20 years, and the inner city is where the value of proper preparation shows most clearly.

The terrace is the defining building type here. Walk through Surry Hills, Paddington, Darlinghurst, Glebe or Redfern and you see the same architectural language repeated with endless variation: rendered or tuckpointed facades, cast iron lacework on balconies, decorative parapets, timber sash windows and tessellated tiled entries. Inside, high ceilings carry deep cornices, ceiling roses and picture rails. None of this survives a rushed job. Our exterior painting on terraces means scraping back failing coatings, treating rust on iron lacework and fixings, sanding timber properly, filling and priming, and only then applying full coats. Our interior painting team takes the same approach to cutting in around ornate plasterwork, which is slow work done properly and quick work done badly.

Heritage conservation is a real consideration in this part of Sydney. Large parts of Paddington, Glebe, Surry Hills and Darlinghurst sit within heritage conservation areas, where external colour schemes and finishes can attract council interest. We are comfortable working with period-appropriate palettes, and if something about a proposed external scheme looks like it may need council consideration, we will say so before the first tin is opened rather than after.

Practical access is the other inner city reality. Terraces typically share walls on both sides, have no driveway and front directly onto a narrow footpath. We plan for that: minimal kerb footprint, materials carried in rather than spread across the pavement, appropriate access equipment for facades and parapets, and the public footpath kept clear and safe. Streets like Oxford Street in Paddington and Crown Street in Surry Hills are busy at all hours, and we work in a way that acknowledges it.

Further west around Pyrmont, Ultimo and Chippendale, the building stock shifts to warehouse conversions and apartments, with high walls, exposed brick, steel detailing and open-plan volumes. These jobs are about clean modern finishes and having the right access gear for tall spaces. We also take on a steady stream of hospitality and shopfront painting through the inner city village strips, generally overnight or midweek so venues lose as little trade as possible.

The inner city is only part of what we do. Maestro Painting is one of Sydney's trusted painting teams precisely because we work right across greater Sydney, applying the same standards from a Paddington terrace to a family home in the outer suburbs. You can see every region we serve on our Sydney service areas page.

Painting Matched to Terraces, Cottages and Conversions

The inner city holds several building types in very close quarters. The grand Victorian terraces of Paddington and Glebe, often two or three storeys with full-width iron lacework balconies, sit at one end. At the other are the small single-storey workers' cottages found through Redfern, Chippendale and parts of Surry Hills, modest in footprint but frequently carrying just as many layers of historic paint.

Between them are the semis, the converted terraces that now contain two or three flats, and the newer infill apartments. Each brings its own demands. On a converted terrace we may be dealing with a strata committee, shared entries and multiple tenancies. On a warehouse conversion in Pyrmont or Ultimo, we are working with double-height walls, exposed brick that owners often want to keep raw, and steel window frames that need the right primer.

The other constant is age. Buildings from the 1870s through to the 1920s have usually been repainted many times over, and some of the earliest coatings are lead-based. We prepare those surfaces carefully and responsibly rather than aggressively dry-sanding them, and prime properly so the new system bonds to something stable. That is the difference between a finish that holds for a decade and one that starts flaking off the parapet within two summers.

What to Expect

How an inner city job runs

Organised from the first visit, and planned around the realities of terrace living.

1. On-site quote

We look at the building, assess the detail and the existing coatings, discuss colours, then send a free written fixed-price quote.

2. Access planning

We work out how we will reach the facade and parapet, where materials will sit and how the footpath stays clear and safe.

3. Preparation

Careful scraping, sanding, rust treatment on ironwork, filling and priming. On period buildings this is most of the job.

4. Protection

Floors, stairs, timber joinery, tessellated tiles and shared entries all covered and masked before painting begins.

5. Painting

Full coats with the right product for render, timber, iron or plaster, and clean lines where surfaces meet.

6. Final walkthrough

We inspect the finished work with you, touch up anything you flag and only call it done when you are happy.

Good to Know

Inner City Sydney painting FAQs

The questions we hear most from inner city owners. Still curious? Just get in touch.

Do you paint Victorian terraces in Surry Hills and Paddington?

Constantly. Terraces are the defining housing type of the inner city, and we work on them week in, week out. That means rendered and tuckpointed facades, cast iron lacework, parapets, timber sash windows, decorative cornices and ceiling roses, all with the patient preparation older buildings need.

Can you work within a heritage conservation area?

Yes. Much of Paddington, Glebe, Surry Hills and Darlinghurst sits inside heritage conservation areas, where external colour schemes and finishes can be subject to council guidance. We are comfortable working with period-appropriate palettes and will flag anything that looks like it may need council consideration before we start.

How do you handle a terrace with no off-street parking or side access?

Carefully, and it is normal for us. Most inner city terraces have no driveway and share walls on both sides. We keep the kerb footprint minimal, carry materials in rather than sprawling across the footpath, work off suitable access equipment for the front facade and keep the public footpath clear and safe throughout.

Do you deal with old lead-based paint on inner city buildings?

Yes. Buildings from the Victorian and Federation eras often carry many layers of old coatings, and some of the earliest are lead-based. We prepare these surfaces carefully and responsibly rather than aggressively dry-sanding them, and we prime properly so the new system bonds to a sound, stable base. See our exterior painting service.

Do you paint warehouse conversions and apartments in Pyrmont and Ultimo?

Yes. Pyrmont, Ultimo and Chippendale are full of converted warehouses and newer apartment buildings, often with high ceilings, exposed brick, steel detailing and open-plan layouts. We have the access equipment and the patience for tall walls and awkward voids.

Can you paint a cafe, bar or shopfront around Crown Street or Oxford Street?

Yes. Hospitality and retail work around Crown Street, Oxford Street and the Redfern and Glebe village strips is a regular part of what we do. We work overnight or in the quiet part of the week so venues lose as little trade as possible.

Do you work with strata committees on terrace conversions and unit blocks?

Yes. A lot of inner city terraces have been converted into flats, and there are plenty of older walk-up blocks too. We are used to quoting for strata committees, providing clear scopes and coordinating access to common areas and individual units.

How much does it cost to paint a terrace in Redfern or Glebe?

It depends heavily on the amount of detail and preparation involved. Two terraces of the same width can be very different jobs once you factor in lacework, parapets, sash windows and the condition of existing paint. We quote after seeing the property, with a clear fixed price and no hidden extras.

Do you only work in the inner city?

No. The inner city is close to our heart, but we are painters across Sydney and we work right across greater Sydney, from the Eastern Suburbs and Inner West through to the North Shore, Parramatta and the Sutherland Shire.

Do you offer free quotes across Inner City Sydney?

Yes. We provide free, no-obligation written quotes throughout Surry Hills, Paddington, Darlinghurst, Redfern, Glebe, Pyrmont, Ultimo, Chippendale and the surrounding inner city suburbs.

Planning painting with limited access

For a terrace, apartment or commercial space in the inner city, tell us about loading access, parking restrictions, stairs and any permitted working hours. Include shared corridors or building manager requirements where relevant. A clear room and surface list helps distinguish a straightforward refresh from a repaint involving detailed restoration.
